Sources, dates and how medals are counted

India’s all-time Summer Olympic record through Paris 2024 is 10 gold, 10 silver and 21 bronze: 41 medals. The post-Independence count begins at London 1948: 7 gold, 8 silver and 21 bronze, or 36. It excludes the hockey golds of 1928, 1932 and 1936, and the two athletics silvers credited to India in 1900.

Winter totals are zero through Milano Cortina 2026. Each medal-winning event counts once, including team events. These are senior Olympic Games; Youth Olympics, Paralympics, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games are separate competitions. The 2025 population estimate is not the population in earlier Olympic years.

Medals show achievement; population alone does not explain results. KhelPath aims to make the next step easier, whether someone plays for a medal, fitness, friendship or a future in sport. Records checked 7 September 2026.

THE HURDLES BEFORE THE FINISH LINE

India cannot afford to lose talent
between one step and the next.

An athlete should not have to figure out coaching, funding, travel, care and trials alone just to keep playing.

WHAT THE ATHLETE NEEDS

The full cost. Help that arrives.

Coaching is only part of the bill. Kit and travel can decide whether an athlete gets to keep showing up.

Put the session, kit and travel in one support request. A company, CSR or community fund can see exactly what help is for.

What you can see working

In Bhoomika’s example: ₹1,300 in needs, ₹1,500 approved, collection and arrival confirmed, ₹200 left.

REAL STORIES. DATED REPORTING.

Support cannot
end at the podium.

India’s athletes should not have to rebuild their support system at every stage. Getting there, staying in sport and building a life after competition all need a path.

01PREPARATION

Arif Khan · Winter Olympian

Qualification does not pay for preparation.

In August 2025, Khan told Reuters that a funding gap was keeping him off snow, despite existing support from the Inspire Institute of Sport.

He later competed at Milano Cortina 2026, finishing 39th in slalom. His current finances are not assessed here.

02LIFE BEYOND A MEDAL

Sita Sahu · Special Olympics medallist

A one-time award is not lifelong support.

After two bronze medals at the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games, Sahu received ₹5 lakh from NTPC in 2013. Reporting in 2022 described renewed livelihood difficulty and further assistance.

These are dated accounts, not a claim about her life today. Special Olympics is distinct from the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

03A SECOND CAREER

Parupalli Kashyap · former world No. 6

Experience should open the next door.

Writing in February 2025, Kashyap described having to establish himself again as a coach. He called for better education, employment and coaching opportunities after competition.

His first-person account also acknowledged employer support. It describes a career transition, not destitution.

WHAT WE CAN MAKE EASIERTurn experience into a next role

The next generation needs their experience.

Former champions already coach and mentor through Khelo India Centres. KhelPath brings that route beside education, welfare and a practical sports-work plan—so a player can see more than one way forward.
