Trampolining
Trampolining turns repeated vertical rebounds into a continuous sequence of twists, somersaults, and body shapes. Height, difficulty, execution, travel, and time of flight all influence the result.
At a glance
- A competition routine contains ten skills.
- Modern elite scoring includes difficulty and execution components.
- Athletes aim to remain centered over the bed.
Player profile. Trampolinists combine explosive leg drive with exceptional aerial orientation. They must feel rotation and twist without a fixed visual horizon, open at the correct moment for the next bed contact, and make small corrections early enough that the routine does not drift toward the frame.
Where it happens
A woven trampoline bed is tensioned by springs inside a padded frame, with safety mats and spotters surrounding the apparatus. The athlete repeatedly returns to the same small surface, so height is useful only when horizontal travel remains controlled and the landing stays within the bed.

What you need
- Competition trampoline
- Safety pads and end decks
- Judging and time-of-flight system
How to play
- The gymnast builds height, then performs ten connected aerial elements without extra bounces, finishing upright under control. Each landing should return near the center.
The essential rules
- A routine is a sequence of aerial acrobatics separated by contacts with the trampoline bed.
- Judges assess the style and execution of the routine.
- Clean body form contributes to the result.
- Consistency of height contributes to the result.
- Continuity of movement contributes to the result.
- Recognized difficult moves add difficulty credit.
- The principal competition body shapes are tuck, pike, and straight.
- Bed contacts may use the feet, front, back, or seat as described by the source.
- A double-mini pass uses two moves and no more than three bed contacts before the landing zone.
- A tumble-track routine contains eight elements and finishes in the landing zone.
How the result is decided
A competitive routine is built from a fixed number of consecutive skills and assessed for execution, difficulty, and control of position. An interruption or departure from the trampoline ends the sequence, while travel, incomplete shapes, instability, and an uncontrolled finish progressively reduce the score.
Fouls and penalties
- Fall on bed, pads, or floor
- Extra bounce
- Incomplete skill
- Excessive travel
- Uncontrolled finish
Techniques
- Tuck, pike, and straight shapes
- Somersaults and twists
- Centering corrections
- Controlled opening for landing
Tactics
- Build reliable height before difficult skills.
- Order skills to manage orientation and fatigue.
- Protect the final landing.

How the sport developed
The book traces the modern trampoline from training and entertainment devices to a regulated gymnastic apparatus. Standard bed dimensions, codified body positions, routine length, and judging for displacement transformed repeated bouncing into a technically ordered sequence and eventually an Olympic discipline.
- Time-of-flight technology adds an objective measure to a judged event.
