Sports Aerobics
Sports aerobics transforms fast, continuous exercise into a competitive performance. Routines combine aerobic patterns with strength, jumps, flexibility, balance, and synchronization.
At a glance
- Competition includes individual, pair, trio, and group formats.
- Music and continuous movement are defining features.
- A smaller floor is used for some individual categories than for groups.
Player profile. Competitors need cardiovascular capacity to sustain fast choreography and enough strength and flexibility to make individual elements clear. Pairs and groups add exact synchronization: each change of level, arm line, jump, and landing must occur together even as fatigue makes fine timing harder.
Where it happens
Aerobic gymnastics uses a marked floor smaller than the artistic floor area, keeping high-tempo movement visually concentrated. Competitors must cover the space with continuous patterns while inserting jumps, strength holds, flexibility elements, and floor transitions without leaving the boundary.
- The source shows category-dependent areas around 7 m and 10 m square.
What you need
- Performance floor
- Music system
- Regulation clothing and shoes
How to play
- Competitors maintain energetic movement while executing required skill families and musical choreography. Judges reward difficulty, execution, and presentation.
The essential rules
- The gymnast performs a continuous routine to self-selected vigorous music.
- The routine lasts exactly one minute 45 seconds in the source format.
- The entire performance area must be used in rhythm with the music.
- The program contains at least eight but no more than 12 compulsory elements.
- At least two elements come from push-ups, free falls, and leg circles.
- The routine includes at least one element from each of the four stated movement groups.
- Competitors perform the seven listed basic steps within the program.
- The source scoring starts at ten and deducts for missing group elements and prohibited moves.
How the result is decided
Judges consider artistic presentation, execution, and the value of declared difficulty elements. Falls, incomplete positions, poor synchronization, boundary violations, prohibited moves, and breaks in continuous aerobic character reduce the result, so difficulty cannot be isolated from tempo and presentation.
Fouls and penalties
- Out of bounds
- Fall
- Overtime
- Missing element group
- Synchronization error
Techniques
- Aerobic step patterns

- High kicks and flexibility elements
Tactics
- Select difficulty that preserves aerobic continuity.
- Use formations to show synchronization.
- Place demanding strength skills before fatigue peaks.

How the sport developed
The book shows competitive aerobics emerging from popular fitness exercise and being recast as a codified gymnastic discipline. Defined floor sizes, element groups, music duration, attire, and judging criteria separated competition routines from instructional classes while preserving their energetic, continuous movement.
- The source presents aerobic dance as a judged sport rather than a workout class.
Play it in India
A dated public source documents an Indian federation, programme or centre for this sport. Current local intake, price and availability still require confirmation.
- Gymnastics Federation of India is the current organisation reference and is matched to a dated MYAS recognition source. This does not establish local intake, price, schedule or availability.
