Player profile. Union teams combine powerful forwards with faster backs, but every player must pass, tackle, support, and understand changing offside lines. Forwards contest scrums, line-outs, rucks, and mauls, while backs exploit space created by those phases and reorganize rapidly when possession changes.

A long rectangular field extends beyond each goal line into in-goal areas, with halfway, 22-metre, touch, and goal-line markings organizing restarts and territory. H-shaped posts allow kick scoring, while open space and continuous contests for the ball give both width and depth tactical value.

How to play

1. Teams carry, pass, and kick to cross the try line while contesting possession after tackles. Set pieces restart or organize play through scrums and line-outs.

The essential rules

1. Hand passes may not travel forward.
2. A tackled ball carrier must release or play the ball as required.
3. Tacklers must release and move away.
4. Players entering a ruck or maul must do so legally and remain onside.
5. Knock-ons and forward passes usually restart with a scrum.
6. The touchline restart is a line-out.
7. Offside lines change with open play, rucks, mauls, scrums, and kicks.
8. Dangerous tackles and foul play are penalized and may receive cards.

How the result is decided

Grounding the ball in the opposition in-goal produces a try, after which a conversion is attempted; penalty goals and drop goals offer kick-based points. The score therefore weighs territorial pressure, disciplined defense, and finishing skill differently, because a serious infringement can be turned into points without crossing the try line.
