Gymnastics & strength

Powerlifting

Powerlifting measures maximal strength across three controlled barbell lifts. The best successful attempt in each lift contributes to an overall total within a bodyweight class.

At a glance

  • The competition order is squat, bench press, then deadlift.
  • Each athlete normally receives three attempts per lift.
  • Three referees judge compliance with movement standards.

Player profile. Powerlifters specialize in maximal force but also rehearse consistent competition positions. Bracing, bar path, joint alignment, controlled descent, and response to referee commands determine whether strength is recognized, while attempt selection must account for fatigue accumulated across all three lifts.

Where it happens

Powerlifting takes place on a compact platform equipped for the squat, bench press, and deadlift. Adjustable racks, a bench, calibrated plates, collars, spotters, and a referee sight line allow very heavy attempts to be controlled while making depth, pauses, lockout, and commands observable.

  • Standard competition platform and approved racks.

What you need

  • Power bar and calibrated plates
  • Squat rack
  • Bench
  • Singlet, belt, wraps, and approved supportive gear depending on division

How to play

  1. Athletes complete up to three judged attempts in each lift, generally increasing the load. A majority of referees must signal a good lift.

The essential rules

  1. The competition contains the squat, bench press, and deadlift.
  2. Three failed attempts eliminate the athlete in the source format.
  3. The winner lifts the highest combined weight across the three components.
  4. In the squat, the hips descend below the knees.
  5. The completed squat is held until the judges' signal.
  6. The deadlift finishes upright with a straight back and is held for the signal.
  7. The deadlift bar must be replaced on the floor rather than dropped.
  8. In the bench press, the bar touches the chest, returns to its original position, and is replaced on the rack.

How the result is decided

The best successful squat, bench press, and deadlift are added to form the total. Athletes therefore manage three attempts in each lift strategically: an opener secures a mark, later choices pursue position, and any lift that misses its technical command contributes nothing regardless of the weight moved.

Fouls and penalties

  • Insufficient squat depth
  • Missed referee command
  • Uneven or incomplete lockout
  • Downward movement of bar
  • Dropped bar

Techniques

  • Low- or high-bar squat
  • Bench arch and leg drive
  • Conventional or sumo deadlift
  • Bracing

Tactics

  • Choose conservative openers.
  • Use attempt selection to secure placing.
  • Save the most aggressive jump for the final deadlift.

Disciplines and variants

  • Equipped powerlifting
  • Single-lift events

How the sport developed

The book presents powerlifting as a distinct development from general weight training and Olympic lifting. Standardizing the squat, bench press, and deadlift, along with depth, pause, and lockout requirements, created a three-lift total that could compare strength without relying on the faster overhead techniques of weightlifting.

  • The final deadlift often changes placings because athletes can select weights after seeing rivals' totals.
