Kung Fu: Taolu
Taolu is the performance branch of competitive wushu, combining martial sequences with speed, balance, flexibility, and acrobatics. Individual and group routines may use bare hands or traditional weapons.
At a glance
- International competition includes northern, southern, and tai chi-derived routines.
- Weapon forms include broadsword, straight sword, spear, and staff.
- Scores combine execution and degree of difficulty.
Player profile. Competitors need gymnastic strength, deep-leg endurance, flexibility, balance, speed, aesthetic control, and precise memory. Deep stances demand leg endurance while jumps and rapid direction changes require gymnastic power. The performer must also project rhythm and intent without losing the exact sequence held in memory.
Where it happens
Performed on a rectangular carpeted competition floor, approximately 14 m by 8 m for standard routines, with judges positioned along the sides. The carpet gives judges an unobstructed view of stances, leaps, balances, and weapon paths across a 14 by 8 m rectangle. Remaining inside that boundary is part of controlling a routine at speed.

What you need
- wushu uniform
- optional broadsword, straight sword, spear, staff, or other approved weapon
- competition carpet
How to play
- Declare the routine and weapon class.
- Enter and salute.
- Perform the required sequence within the time and area limits.
- Receive judges' scores for quality and difficulty.
The essential rules
- The routine must remain within the competition area.
- Required elements depend on the event class.
- A routine has a prescribed time window.
- Loss of balance and falls draw deductions.
- Weapon drops or breaks draw major deductions.
- Missing required movements lowers the score.
- Difficulty credit depends on successful completion.
- Group events require synchronization.
- Judges evaluate stance, force, rhythm, and expression.
How the result is decided
Panels combine execution, overall performance, and verified difficulty, subtracting deductions for errors or boundary violations. A difficult acrobatic movement adds value only when completed cleanly, so instability can erase the advantage of attempting it.

How the sport developed
Modern taolu competition standardized traditional Chinese martial routines during the twentieth century. Twentieth-century wushu competition organized many Chinese martial traditions into comparable bare-hand and weapon events. Northern, southern, and tai chi-derived forms remain visibly different inside the standardized judging framework.
- Some events choreograph simulated combat between two or more performers.
