How the sport developed

Pioneering gliders preceded the lightweight controllable delta-wing designs that made modern recreational flight possible. Modern hang gliders grew from flexible-wing experiments into engineered aircraft, while organized cross-country tasks encouraged better instruments, materials, and shared flight procedures. A successful flight therefore depends as much on declining an unsuitable launch or leaving weakening lift early as it does on extracting maximum distance from favourable air.
