Basketball

Basketball is a fast possession game in which teams alternate attack and defense on a compact court. Shooting range, ball movement, rebounding, and coordinated spacing determine efficiency.

At a glance

  • Five players per team are on court.
  • Field goals are worth two or three points depending on location; free throws are worth one.
  • A shot clock limits each possession.

Player profile. Basketball rewards acceleration, jumping, coordination, and decision-making in crowded space. Ball handlers read defenders while dribbling, shooters reproduce fine mechanics under time pressure, interior players screen and rebound, and all five players must switch quickly between organized attack and defense after a turnover or missed shot.

Where it happens

A basketball court concentrates play around two raised baskets, with boundary, center, lane, free-throw, and three-point markings shaping possession. The restricted area channels rebounding and interior defense, while the arc changes the reward for longer shots and the shot clock prevents a team from holding the ball indefinitely.

  • FIBA court 28 m x 15 m; NBA court 94 ft x 50 ft, as contrasted in the source.

How to play

  1. The offense advances by passing or dribbling and attempts a shot before the possession clock expires. The defense contests shots, denies passing lanes, and tries to secure rebounds or turnovers.

The essential rules

  1. A player must dribble while moving with possession.
  2. Restarting a dribble after ending it is a double-dribble violation.
  3. Traveling is illegal movement without a legal dribble.
  4. The ball must leave the shooter's hand before the shot clock expires.
  5. Contact is judged as personal or team fouls.
  6. A player is disqualified after the competition's foul limit.
  7. Goaltending and illegal basket interference are prohibited.
  8. Out-of-bounds possession goes to the opponent of the last touching team.

How the result is decided

A successful free throw counts one point, a field goal from inside the arc counts two, and a legal shot released beyond it counts three. The higher total wins after regulation and any overtime; the shot must leave the hand before the period or possession signal expires to count.

How the sport developed

The book describes basketball as an invented indoor game designed around elevated goals and a ball passed between teams. Dribbling, backboards, standardized courts, timed possessions, and the three-point line developed the original concept into a faster sport with specialized roles and distinct professional and international traditions.

  • Early games used peach baskets before open nets and standardized rims.
  • The source's salary and all-time tables are a 2020 snapshot.
