How the sport developed

Downhill skiing developed from Nordic travel techniques after fixed-heel equipment enabled sharper mountain turns. Fixed-heel bindings allowed skis to steer more securely on steep mountain slopes, separating Alpine technique from Nordic travel. Resorts, lift access, and timed gate races then produced specialized speed and technical disciplines.
